Mahayana 大乗 Lit., “great vehicle”. The metaphor of the vehicle expresses the idea of conveying all sentient beings from this world of delusion to the realm of enlightenment. The term contains an implicit criticism of the view that the Buddha’s teaching is solely for one’s own emancipation. In the Mahayana, bodhisattvas are those who, in addition to their own attainment of liberation, aim at bringing all others to Buddhahood as well.
