Jodo Shinshu 浄土真宗 In Shinran’s usage this means the true essence of the Pure Land way, which points to the Primal Vow of Amida Buddha; in other words, it signifies the way to the attainment of birth in the Pure Land through Other Power. Now it is popularly used as the name of the institution of Shinran’s teaching. In his letter 1-15, Rennyo says: “it is ‘Jodo-shin-shu’ that our Founder named this school. ... Other Pure Land schools teach various other practices to be applicable for birth in the Pure Land, but our Master excluded them for the attainment of birth. This is why we will attain birth in the true fulfilled land. For this reason, he specifically added shin (, lit. “true”) to the name.”
